In order for your insulation to perform at its most efficient, it must rest on a solid, sealed surface (an air barrier). In most cases, the air barrier in your attic is the ceiling drywall. Any penetrations through that air barrier such as bath fans, light fixtures, plumbing stacks, flues, and even interior walls, create pathways for air to flow. Your insulation will not stop this air flow. These holes in the air barrier must be sealed to prevent air from moving between the conditioned house and the unconditioned attic. Air sealing plays a vital role in eliminating wasted energy.
